Faced with such a worthy and implacable foe, we determined to use the bold strategy of leaving it alone, which allowed us to escape unharmed.īut it left us high on a ledge, with few options. That’s when we encountered the great wyrm. Lovely, but hardly worth all the trouble we had faced to reach this point. We escaped the wrath of the red toad through the advanced tactic of calmly walking past, then proceeded up to the top of the ledge.įrom the top, we had a nice view from between the trees. Oh, how I regretted my hubris in taunting the stones, for we now faced almost certain peril. There was no response, save for the icy cold glare of the stone.īut all the shouting did draw the attention of the ledge’s guardian, the red toad of doom. We took a path to the left that leads to the top.īut first, I needed to taunt the ledge. While we were not fooled by the table-trap, we were fooled into thinking that this was the ledge we had come here for, not knowing that there is much more to this ledge than can be seen here. We hadn’t any victuals, regardless, and so we were not taken in by such subterfuge.Ī panoramic view of the ledge that is seen from the picnic area. The tables are covered with spider webs and bird droppings. “Top” is a more pleasing term than “base”, so thus we chose our path.Ī good place for a picnic? So it would seem. We finally surmounted this obstacle by bravely stepping over our foe, and were thus able to continue on our journey.Ī crossroads confounded us. This golden dragon barred our way, and it seemed that all was lost. It is 6:15 AM now, so there is no time to lose. Scouting parties have given us to know that it is not quite a mile to the base of the ledges. Our mission: to bring this secret into the light. It so happened that we did want to, since we wanted to encourage the habit of not charging to park.īuried deep in the heart of the Leominster State Forest lies a secret so terrifying, it could only be called “Crow Hill Ledges”.
#The crow 1/4 mile time free
It is free to park and hike but there is a place to leave donations if you want to. Trevelyan was not feeling well, and stayed home.
You must purchase your tram ticket at the office / tickets are not sold at the Moose Mountain summit. For this hike, it was just the ladies and myself. You can, of course, start here, hike up and hike/ride the gondola back. After crossing the river, when you hit the gravel road, take it to the south to the main parking area at Papa Charlie’s at Lutsen Mountains. From the top of the hill, take the Superior Hiking Trail down the ridge to the top of Mystery Mountain for another overlook, then into the woods to the falls of the Poplar River. Hill top trails allow more perspectives on the lake views, and a stunning overlook gives 180-degrees northern views of maple hillsides, especially stunning in the autumn.
At the top, head to the chalet for 180-degree views of Lake Superior, the shoreline, and maybe on a clear, low-humidity day, the south shore of the lake. For the downhill version, ride the tram over the Poplar River and up the east face of Moose Mountain. Waterfalls, woods, wide-open vistas and an optional tram ride make this hike rather spectacular.
